Denver’s premier contemporary big band performs a very special tribute to Dizzy Gillespie featuring Brad Goode at the beautiful Historic Grant Avenue community center on Saturday, July 22nd at 4:00pm. Enjoy small batch beer and urban wines before listening to the Metropolitan Jazz Orchestra perform in “A Taste of Jazz” in collaboration with A Gift of Jazz, one of the most popular performances of their concert season.

Trumpet legend Dizzy Gillespie is considered one of the most influential figures of jazz and bebop in the 20th century.  Gillespie is known for his "swollen" cheeks and uniquely angled signature trumpet's bell. He worked with musical greats including Cab Calloway, Ella Fitzgerald, Earl Hines, Charlie Parker and Duke Ellington. The Metropolitan Jazz Orchestra will entertain the audience with Gillespie’s familiar and popular tunes that include "Oop Bob Sh' Bam," "Groovin' High," "Salt Peanuts," "A Night in Tunisia" and "Johnny Come Lately."

Trumpeter Brad Goode is a unique and instantly recognizable virtuoso. Working as a soloist, bandleader, and lead trumpet, Goode has consistently been one of the busiest performers of the past 25 years.  He was the leader of the house band at the famous Green Mill Jazz Club, and appointed as a Cultural Ambassador for Chicago Mayor Richard Daley.  Goode was named one of the most influential Chicagoans of the 1980s by the Chicago Tribune, who credited him as a “major catalyst in the revitalization of the Chicago jazz scene.”  Goode is currently an Associate Professor of Jazz Studies at the University of Colorado.  His 15 solo recordings can be heard on the Delmark, Sunlight, SteepleChase, and Origin labels.

Specially priced glasses of wine, cider and beer will be sold starting at 2:30pm.  Epic Brewing Company will have a selection of its award-winning beers available.  MJO welcomes Denver’s Kingman Estates Winery with a selection of their authentic, handcrafted local wines. Soda may be purchased for non-drinkers and youth, and complimentary snacks will be available.

Tickets for “A Taste of Jazz” are only $20.  They are available at the door or on the Dates page at www.mjo-denver.org.  The Historic Grant Avenue is located at 216 South Grant Street Denver 80209 – http://www.historicgrantave.org.
