MycoMorphosis: Dancing with Fungi is a multimedia Bio-Art installation that incorporates mycology, sculpture, electroacoustic soundscapes, and dance to bring to life the fascinating world of mycelium fungi.  Drawing from his research in subterranean bioacoustics, Espinosa’s installation features an eight-foot-tall myco-sculpture (“myco” from the Greek word for fungus), which represents the vast underground inter-plant networks of mycelium fungi that connect to the root system of thousands of plants and trees made up of fungal colonies with fruiting mushrooms of different species.  Musical soundscapes are created in real time by hooking up the fungi to bio-sensor and bio-sonification devices that convert the mycelium’s electrical and textural activity into Live sounds.  The installation is further activated by dancers performing a choreography in the style of Butoh (舞踏, Butō) inspired by the vibrant ecosystems of fungi and their shapeshifting movement through time and space.

This interdisciplinary artwork creates an immersive experience that demonstrates a deeply intimate relationship to nature, where the distinctions between human and non-human worlds disintegrate in slow and attentive bodily practice.  With every mushroom cap and stem, this artwork generates new thinking that bridges worlds we know with worlds we don't know, offering imagination, language and artistic possibilities that contribute toward building kinship with the earth.
