BMoCA is seeking a Development Director who will manage the museum’s upcoming capital campaign and provide strategic leadership for all fundraising and development efforts.

With its 50th anniversary on the near horizon, Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art (BMoCA) is at an exciting time in its history. Over the past decade, the museum has reached new heights thanks to record-breaking attendance numbers, dramatic programmatic growth, and the critical support of its community. BMoCA is now bursting at the seams, and in 2017, the museum will launch a capital campaign to support an expansion of its facilities. With an expanded facility, BMoCA will be able to realize its vision of becoming a leader in the global conversation about art and culture.

 

BMoCA is seeking a Development Director who will lead the organization through its next growth stage and provide leadership for the museum’s upcoming $26 million capital campaign for expansion. The Development Director will be responsible for managing campaign operations, developing a portfolio of prospects for principle and planned gifts, soliciting major gifts, and planning campaign events. He/she will work with the Executive Director, development staff, Board, and Campaign Steering Committee to guide their fundraising work. The Development Director will be responsible for building relationships through customized cultivation plans with the goal of generating transformational gifts that support the museum’s strategic goals, including facility and programmatic expansion.

 

I. Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

 

A. Provide Strategic Leadership (50%)
• Provide strategic leadership in the areas of fundraising, development and stakeholder engagement
• Assist with creation of an annual development strategy and timeline for the organization that incorporates individual, corporate, foundation and government funders
• Fundraise for BMoCA’s annual operating budget, including identifying and cultivating prospects, conceiving and writing proposals, ensuring appropriate donor recognition, and reporting on programmatic achievements to funders
• Collaborate with key staff, the Board of Trustees, and the Campaign Steering Committee to develop and maintain case statements for varied audiences
• Work with the Marketing department to develop a portfolio of collateral that supports case statement(s)
• Oversee research of funding sources and trends
• Conduct fundraising trainings for staff, the Board of Trustees and volunteers as needed
• Define a set of metrics and benchmarks for measuring departmental success
and evaluate progress to ensure goals are achieved
• Present clear, analytical fundraising reports on a regular basis to key staff and the Board of Directors
• Review fundraising policies and recommend changes as needed
• Perform other assigned tasks not specifically listed herein but which may be required
• Represent BMoCA at meetings and conferences

 

B. Capital Campaign Management and Leadership (50%)
• Design and implement overall fundraising strategy to achieve BMoCA’s capital campaign goal of $26 million
• Serve as primary staff liaison to the Campaign Steering Committee by scheduling meetings, setting agendas, developing materials, facilitating meetings, and following up on action items
• Report campaign progress to the Board of Directors at quarterly meetings 
• Identify prospects that have both capacity and demonstrated interest in advancing mission-related areas of the organization
• Create a cultivation plan and establish benchmarks for each prospect 
• Work with Development staff, Board, and Capital Campaign Steering Committee to identify top individual and corporate foundation prospects and granting organizations that can advance funding priorities through multi-year gifts
• Plan and implement campaign donor cultivation events
• Plan and implement donor recognition strategy
• Expand donor base with effort at identifying next generation donors and leaders
• Continuously cultivate relationships with donors and the community by maintaining visibility and responsiveness
• Utilize Altru software for prospect tracking, donor management, and reporting
• Maintain thorough and accurate records on campaign gifts and pledges 
• Coordinate campaign materials and appeals with Marketing and Development staffs

 

II. Education and/or Experience:

 

• Bachelor’s Degree required; Master’s degree preferred; CFRE desirable
• A minimum of 5-8 years of relevant work experience required. 
• Experience managing a capital campaign

 

III. Job Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

 

Professional Abilities:
• Ability to construct, articulate, and implement strategic development plan
• Ability to articulate a case for support to corporate partners, volunteers, and the general public
• Strong analytical and quantitative abilities with experience developing and presenting reports based on fundraising goals and metrics
• Experience with cultivating individual donors required. Proven successful proposal writing and securing of private funding required.
• Demonstrated knowledge of government application processes and award management, as well as familiarity with federal grant writing
• Experience in donor cultivation event planning

Hours & compensation
The Development Director works full time for 40 hours per week and will be required to attend occasional off-site and on-site events in the evenings. Occasional travel may be required. The salary range for this position is $75,000-$110,000, based on experience. This position includes health benefits.
