HAIR: The American Tribal Love-Rock Musical

Directed by Heather Frost

June 1-24, 2017

Get ready to be transported into the revolutionary era of the 1960s, as a wild tribe of young Americans searches for love and peace. HAIR celebrates the hippie counterculture in all its barefoot, long-haired, bell-bottomed, beaded and fringed glory—and provides a glimpse into the exhilarating and tumultuous movement that changed the world.

“This is an exuberant, large-scale show being performed in a very intimate setting,” said Director Heather Frost. “With only a 75-seat house and phenomenal live music, we plan to give the audience an unforgettable experience.”

This highly spirited musical sensation tells the story of a group of flower children from the "Age of Aquarius" struggling to balance their young lives, loves, and the sexual revolution with their rebellion against the Vietnam War and traditional society. Set in New York City in 1968, the musical explores issues of race, war, protest, peace and the environment.

This summer’s local production comes, once again, at a time of political upheaval and resistance in the US. “HAIR reminds us of the important social and political lessons of the ‘60s,” said Frost. “Similar issues are resurfacing today that make the show particularly timely and poignant. It’s no longer just a historically significant show; it’s once again relevant.”

HAIR was originally produced off-Broadway in October of 1967, and through its popularity, quickly moved to Broadway in 1968 in the midst of a major social, cultural, and sexual revolution. Audiences of the time were both shocked and enthralled by the production’s candid depiction of the hippie movement and its counterculture. (The infamous “nude scene” caused some consternation in certain circles—but overall, audiences were charmed by the show, leading it to become a long-running success.)

This groundbreaking show defined a generation, and was the first musical to introduce rock ‘n’ roll to Broadway; it helped pave the way for some of the greatest musicals of our time. With book and lyrics by Gerome Ragni and James Rado, and music by Galt MacDermot, HAIR features hit songs such as “Aquarius,” “Let The Sun Shine In” and “Good Morning Starshine”.

“What I love about HAIR is that it tells the story of a man struggling to follow his heart’s desire,” Frost said. “It’s about those tough choices we all have to make in life. When your spirit calls you down a path, do you follow, or do you do become stagnant when society tells you differently?  Are you able to break free from social constructs when your soul’s purpose says otherwise?  I think these questions are something everyone can relate to.”
