Printer-friendly version
Description

The Boulder Philharmonic Orchestra hosts a robust internship program that provides learning opportunities for interns in a wide range of areas related to the daily operations of a mid-size performing arts non-profit. We are now accepting inquiries for the 2017-18 concert season (approx. September-April).

Interns are directly involved in most aspects of operations for this highly acclaimed regional professional orchestra, and work alongside experienced professionals, community members, and a network of resources within the Boulder cultural community. As a team player, an intern gains solid professional skills while facilitating the day-to-day work at the Boulder Phil. Examples of projects include but are not limited to:

Education Programs Intern (Fall-Spring):

  • Program Administration: Work with the Director of Community Engagement, the Music Director, and teacher liaison to support the program for the year.
  • Publicity: Plan and implement publicity efforts in order to meet sign-up goals from schools and students for both the Discovery Concert and Young Artist Concerto Competition.
  • Event Planning: Plan day-of-event logistics for the Discovery Concert at Macky Auditorium, including volunteer ushers, seating assignments, and traffic flow.
  • Program Development: Work with staff in envisioning, planning and implementing expansion of existing programs or development of new programs to meet education and outreach goals. Assist with grant proposals as appropriate.
  • This individual will spend an entire production season with us (September through April), averaging 10 hours a week with flexible scheduling.

Development/Marketing Intern (Fall-Spring):

  • Special events: Assist with planning and implementation of our annual Boulder Phil Fanfare and other smaller fundraising events and recitals throughout the year. Research and maintain files on current and potential sponsors.
  • Grant proposals: Assist in writing/editing/submitting grant applications to foundations, government, or corporate funding sources.
  • Donor relations: Assist Director of Development in writing/sending direct mail solicitation and acknowledgment letters.
  • Donor prospecting: Conduct background research on potential or current donors (foundations, corporations, and individuals).
  • Marketing/Audience Development: Conduct grassroots marketing to local groups and student populations, write copy, create and edit website and e-newsletter content.
  • This individual will spend an entire production season with us (September through April), averaging 10 hours a week with flexible scheduling.

Administrative Intern (Summer, and other terms as available):

  • Marketing & Outreach: Assist with online calendars, mass mailings, proof-reading, market research and promotions.
  • Patron Relations: Assist with ticketing, database updates, and outreach to social service agencies.
  • Operations: Maintain recording archive, update repertoire history, and prepare and submit reports for music licensing.
  • This individual will average 10 hours a week during the summer months (or during the season) with flexible scheduling.

We need people with positive attitudes and a willingness to learn. Strong writing, interpersonal skills and attention to detail are required. Experience with Microsoft Excel, Word, HTML, graphic design programs, or social media platforms is a plus. At the end of the experience, the intern should have gained a comprehensive overview of many of the working aspects of a dynamic, hard-working non-profit organization. Interns are generally recent graduates, current graduate students, or career changers. Individuals who have recently completed internships with the Boulder Phil have moved on to full-time employment in arts management, graduate school, or careers in teaching and performing. If interested, please send your resume to Cynthia Sliker, Director of Community Engagement at csliker@boulderphil.org.

** Internships are unpaid positions. Job perks include complimentary tickets to all Boulder Philharmonic concerts, marketable experience working in a dynamic, mid-sized nonprofit, professional references, and the satisfaction of playing a key role in the sucessful execution of our concert season!
