At the University of Colorado Boulder, Folsom Field. Artist's statement: "I made seven wall sculptures for two long event rooms in an expansion of CU's Folsom Field. The rooms are perched atop the eastern side of the stadium. The west walls are all window, looking to the field below and the front range mountains in the distance. The eastern wall has large windows separated by thin walls. The sculptures are placed on those thin walls. The sculptures are designed to add texturesual engagement and variety on the "b" side of these long, west-facing rooms. Typically the rooms are filled with tables and chairs for food service during private events.
The art consultant liked the intimate detail of my wall sculptures, and saw them as a way to enliven the east walls. I reviewed my ideas with the client and created digital drawings of the proposed pieces. They were designed specifically for the tall, thin wall. Upon approval I made the seven sculptures.
The sculptures all incorporate found objects that have aged in outdoor settings: a gallon can, a wooden steering wheel, stove fragments, ancient hardware, boards and branches. The other components were cut, shaped and painted to fulfill the design. The sculpture also carry glyphs from a collection of symbols that I have been creating for many years." - John Boak. 2003.
