Description[Edit This]

Flying high above the lawn, three trees with ‘crazy’ branches support kinetic discs. Twenty-four branches and disc in total depict a natural historical reference of the animals that visit the park. The stainless steel finish reflects the natural elements of the park’s lake, lawn, mature trees and expansive sky.The sculpture’s creative development came through a collaborative effort with the sculptor and an AIPP art committee. The committee was an assembly of artists, professionals and neighborhood residents. Through three meetings and design discussions a list of criteria was developed: simplistic, community, interactive, nature, kinetic, height, sublime color, fun (but not necessarily for kids) and wildlife. The sculpture was designed to be a part of the activities in the park including biking, walking, children playing, festival gathering and disc golf throwing. For the sculptor, the installation of “Flying Trees” describes the relationship between the contemporary world alongside the natural world. The materials and construction brings a modern application to the visual presentation, yet the subject matter gives reference to an ages-old natural world. The work speaks and interacts with ‘today’s’ experience of wind, sky and water. The proportion of the sculpture creates a sense of crossroads and meeting space within the park. The subtle shapes and polished finish allows the viewer to slowly approach the work, as on a walk, and enjoy the curved and rounded shapes unfolding in many directions. The trees are meant to be delightful, whimsical and move in a delicate dance. 2012. Loomiller Park.
