Description[Edit This]

This series of ten oil paintings, each two and half feet square, entitled Spectrum, can be considered as a large orchestral piece in which many complex themes and subthemes occur and reoccur. The main theme is that of predictable progression represented by the color spectrum which is a scientifically sound progression of color and historical documentation of the meanings of shells to man. In opposition to this natural order random interruptions occur, represented b in the series by the black and green squares that appear inexplicable. they symbolize the unpredictable parts of nature that have always been puzzling to man. The givens contained in each painting such as the written material, patterns, flat color, pictorial images and so forth work within each painting and relate to other paintings in the series as well. There is a great deal of detail and of interest to those involved with art, science or literature. The piece forms a circle in that the color spectrum begins and ends at the same place. The viewer that becomes involved with reading the narrative will gain an understanding of what is intended by the piece. 1981. Ramaley Hall, University of Colorado Boulder.
