Description[Edit This]

"Mr. Inside" and "Mr. Outside" are anatomical drawings. Artist Craig Marshall Smith was interested in anatomy and "the interpretive potential of skeletal and muscular systems." "Mr. Inside" depicts a Stegosaurus skeleton. Smith decided on the Stegosaurus as a subject after learning about a petition to make the Stegosaurus Colorado's state fossil and making several trips to the Denver Museum of Nature and Science. The shape of the Stegosaurus' ribs reminded the artist of the St. Louis Arch. Eero Saarinen, the name of the Arch's designer, was placed on the Stegosaurus' femur. With "Mr. Outside" Smith chose to depict a lobster, which is an example of an organism with an external or exo-skeleton. Both drawings were placed on a grid that contrasts with the curving lines and forms of each of the subjects. The materials used were colored pencils and ink on museum board. 1981. Ramaley Hall, University of Colorado Boulder.
